The 2008 School Year Begins!

10 September 2008

Supplies and Uniforms have been delivered to 1884 children this year at 5 schools. The following schools are currently being supported by the PLF:

  • Wat Bo Primary School in Siem Reap
  • Vat Kong Meuch Primary School 6 km from Siem Reap
  • Tchey Primary School, 12 km from Siem Reap
  • Knar Primary School, 45 km from Siem Reap
  • Koh Ker Primary School, 3 hours from Siem Reap in Preah Vihear Province

In addition to the Primary School students enrolled in grades k-6, the PLF is continuing to follow children who have gone on to secondary school. This is accomplished by giving bicycles to all graduating 6th graders, and continuing to give them their supplies and uniforms. Children continuing to Secondary School are able to attend up to 9th grade, then must transfer to High School. Generally, this means they would have to move to Siem Reap as there are very few High Schools in the countryside. Starting this year, the Secondary School near Knar will add grades 10-12 so the children going to Knar now have the chance to actually finish High School. We are hopeful that the children we are currently sponsoring at Knar will finish High School and we are giving them great encouragement.

This year we gave the students more supplies than last year. More books, more pencils and pens, good backpacks, compasses, colored pencils, rulers, sharpeners. They were extremely happy with their packages. We were happy to see the teachers taking over many of the duties of measuring the children for their uniforms and organizing distribution for their classes. We feel pleased that now the teachers are the ones literally handing these children their bundles, instead of us. We think it sends a better message; that the students’ help will come from their community, from their teachers, not from foreigners.

Members of the PLF Board of Directors flew to Cambodia at their own expense to help with all the logistics. Karen Gutierrez, Secretary for the PLF, and her husband Carlos joined us, as well as Nina Davis, Treasurer. I’d like to thank them for staying involved and giving of their time to come and help alleviate the challenges that organizing these distribution events presents. We were happy that logistics for organizing this feat were much more efficient than last year. We are learning how to make it less work and more fun!
