31 October 2013

By Travis Thompson

As Ponheary Ly Foundation opened its schools for this academic year, it launched a host of new programs never seen before in these areas of the country.

More than 2,000 students total turned out for opening day at the schools.  During that time PLF did what it’s done since Ponheary started her work in 2001, distributing school supplies to students.  In addition to classroom supplies, bicycles and awards for top students, PLF began looking forward to the new things that will be happening this year:

SCIENCE

PLF staff members and volunteers have been working for months to beef up our mobile science lab which will have new experiments for students throughout the year at all schools.
STUDENT ENTERPRISE

PLF staff members and supporters are working with Srayang Dorm Grade 9 grads to create a new temple trekking business. For more information e-mail: kohkertreks@theplf.org
GRADE 9 SCHOLARSHIPS AT KNAR

In an attempt to improve retention rates where they've been challenging, PLF is expanding it's scholarship program to include a younger grade level at Knar School. Now, scholarships cover Grade 9 students in hopes that they'll continue school with the support of a PLF scholarship.
ACCOUNTING CLASSES

PLF is adding Quickbooks to its lineup of technology classes this year to help students learn how to do accounting.
TECH UPGRADES

PLF is replacing computers at Tchey School, and adding new solar equipment at Knar.
LIBRARY PROGRAMS AT KNAR

PLF is adding new activities, games and computer time to the Knar library schedule.
FOOD AND HEALTH

PLF and its food sponsors continue to improve and expand food options, including daily breakfast at two schools. In addition, a new nursing program will be introduced at Koh Ker Primary School.
SPORTS AND ARTS

The PLF girls' and boys' soccer teams will be competing in new tournaments this year. And, new arts and crafts projects are happening at Knar and Tchey Schools.
