The 2016 Drought – Hoping for the Best, Preparing for the Worst

In our holistic approach to bringing meaningful education to the most marginalized communities in northern Cambodia, a key component is our food programs, which take the edge off the persistent food insecurity that is prevalent among the children who attend PLF rural schools.

The 2014 Cambodia Demographic Health Survey found that under-nutrition rates remain a public health concern, with 32% of children under 5 years of age stunted, 24% underweight, and 10% wasted. Micronutrient deficiencies are widespread. Rising inequality, landlessness and deterioration of common resources have eroded the coping capacity of food-insecure people. Limited access for the poor to education and health services and low levels of investment in public infrastructure further perpetuate food insecurity and undernutrition.

And that’s in a good year. 2016 has not been a good year. (more…)

2014 Finances are up!

Another year has come to a close and with it come the joys of IRS reporting. The best part of all these spreadsheets is the rare opportunity to let these numbers tell me stories about how we’ve grown, or not,  think about whether or not that growth has been in the right directions,  see where we’ve made mistakes and how they’ve been corrected. Or not.

Year in Photos

Food Bank

PLF has a number of high school students who are from remote villages in the Province where school stops at grade 9. They get on the public taxi and come to the city to figure out a way to continue their education. They are alone, without the support of family and friends and most often they are from very poor families who cannot send them monthly allowances that would support them here. (more…)

The Delight that is Summer School at Knar

There is no squeal of delight as the school year comes to an end here in Cambodia.  Instead, of the 400 students at Knar school, about 120 arrived well ahead of start time on the first day of summer school and they keep turning up every day as summer progresses.

GET REAL: A Few Thoughts as I Move Back to the U.S.

PLF Scholarship Update: 50 New Students Funded!

The worldwide PLF family did it!  We’ve now officially brought in 50 new students to our upper-secondary scholarship program this year, and as of today, all of them are funded to go to public school. (more…)
