Knar Village Learning Center Slated to Open

Last month, I posted a notice that we had withdrawn from Knar School in an article entitled “Toughest Decision Ever”.  That title is a serious understatement. Withdrawing from Knar School was an emotional and very difficult decision, but one that had to be made. Let me get you updated now on how we worked to turn the “Toughest Decision Ever”  into the “Best Thing to Happen, Maybe Ever.” (more…)

Why Science?

As an intern last fall, Hannah wrote a brief article detailing the launch of our physical science curriculum for the Grade 6 Science Club at Knar School. One year later we’d like to use a few more words to update you on the more recent accomplishments of our pilot science project, how the program came into play, and importantly, why it’s shaping up to be one of the most compelling extra curricular programs we’re offering. Romchek Primary School Comes into the Fold

It was in May 2014 that PLF made it’s first visit to Romchek Village, nestled just inside a protected forest in northern Preah Vihear Province. This village is about 20km north of Koh Ker Village, where PLF has run a successful school for almost a decade. The students from Koh Ker have been given access to secondary school by coming to live at the PLF Dormitory at Srayang. The students from Romchek hoped to have a chance to join those ranks and continue their education. But it’s not so simple.

The Evolving Hygiene Program

By Jacqui Rawson

PLF, along with the huge and varied support we get from our donors, volunteers and supporters, is very lucky to be able to boast many success stories in its 9 years of life.  The wellness program at Knar is one of those success stories and one which is now being shared to Koh Ker school.

Ponheary Teaching The Teachers

By Ponheary Ly

Following like my father before me, I was also a teacher.  Over about 20 years I taught both at primary and secondary levels here in Siem Reap.  I also spent time away from home in Phnom Penh and through scholarship programs, in Russia and France so I could receive train-the-teacher training.  In this time away I was taught the skill of how to teach foreign languages.

Saveth – PLF’s Jack-Of-Many-Trades

By Jacqui Rawson

PLF’s introduction to Saveth was in his role as a tuk-tuk driver for Seven Candles Guest House.  Now he’s responsible for our Media, Lego and Google Apps Programs.  There are also a myriad of other guises that self-named “Cambodia’s Mr James Bond” puts on for PLF such as Mr Fix-It and Mr Build-It, to name a few. 2014 Finances are up!

By Lori Carlson

Another year has come to a close and with it come the joys of IRS reporting. The best part of all these spreadsheets is the rare opportunity to let these numbers tell me stories about how we’ve grown, or not,  think about whether or not that growth has been in the right directions,  see where we’ve made mistakes and how they’ve been corrected. Or not.

From the Other Side: Watching PLF Advocacy in Action

By Travis Thompson, PLF Board of Directors

It’s been five months since I left my spot alongside Ponheary, Lori, and the Ponheary Ly Foundation team in the Siem Reap office to move back to the U.S. I’ve spent these last months trying to adjust to my new life in Seattle. The transition has been made easier as I’ve crossed paths with PLF supporters who are doing their part to share with their communities in the U.S. the importance of our work in Cambodia. (more…)

Year in Photos

by Lori Carlson

We are definitely running a little late on re-capping this year!  It was a veritable whirlwind of activity. A lot of new programs were lifted off at existing projects and a new school was brought on board.

We are so grateful to our supporters near and far who believe in Ponheary’s vision and help us to bring all this about. (more…)
